Aah, but maybe it shouldn’t yet. Don’t let the store decorations, shopping advertisements, and social media posts entice you to skip over this beautiful season of Thankfulness.
Celebrate November! November brings Thanksgiving – a whole month to remind us that we are blessed! Before you put up the tree, consider putting up the cornstalks, fall leaves, and Pilgrim figures. Maybe your family could spend the whole month recounting your blessings, naming them one by one as the old song says.
In a world increasingly riddled with scary problems, perhaps it’s more important than ever to to marvel at the good in our lives. To that end, we challenge your family to a Thankfulness Month! Although we provide an entire Thanksgiving Study, below is an abbreviated idea for a once-a-week Family Thankfulness Time:
Week 1: Read Psalm 104 together. Learn verses 1 and 2 of the hymn, “For the Beauty of the Earth.” Brainstorm together, and write down everything God has created in nature for which your family is thankful.
Week 2: Read Psalm 128 together. Learn verse 4 of “For the Beauty of the Earth” (begins, “For the joy of human love”). Review last week’s blessings, then brainstorm all your blessings embodied in family and friends.
Week 3: Read I Thessalonians 5:11-13 and Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 together. Learn verse 5 of “For the Beauty of the Earth” (begins, “For Thy church…). Review weeks 1 and 2 blessing lists, then brainstorm and review all the blessings that flow from your church and church family.
Week 4: Read Romans 9:31-39 together. Learn verse 6 of “For the Beauty of the Earth” (begins, “For Thyself…). Marvel over the blessings that God has given through Jesus Christ. Notice this phrase in verse 6 – “peace on earth” – in light of Luke 2:8-14.
And this should lead you right into Advent! It’s now time to light your tree and read John 8:12!
