Now that the school year is started and things have settled into routine, there’s margin to think past the curriculum to the underlying goals. Where are you headed this school year?
Grow Spiritually
Your top goal should always be to grow in your own faith and your own walk. You can’t be the model God calls you to be if you’re not what He wants you to be spiritually. Perfection isn’t the thing; growing in grace is. As the busy fall kicks into gear, don’t neglect your personal quiet time. We all desperately need our lifeline to the Lord! Seek Him and He will be found.
Grow Your Family
After your own spiritual growth, your next priority is actually your spouse. Children thrive in a home where marriage thrives. Close behind, though, is the spiritual growth of your children. This is the time to examine all your school and extracurricular plans through that lens: will it draw your family closer to the Lord or make it harder to serve Him? God commands parents to bring their children up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. As fathers, we provide for our children physically, spiritually and emotionally. As mothers, we feed them, clothe them, nurture them, and patiently instruct them in spiritual things moment by moment. If that is squeezed out by anything on your schedule or in your life (e.g. social media, activities), pare down to God’s actual calling. Academics are much easier in an environment of spiritual maturity because God is not outside any of our studies, but rather is the Creator of all. Be about the Father’s business; it’s the method to success!
