To Arthurdale in Preston County, a 1930’s New Deal community.

Friday, October 11

During the 1930s, the federal government’s New Deal allocated $25 million for the Subsistence Homestead Program. This initiative aimed to relocate struggling Americans to newly constructed communities planned by the government. Around 100 homestead communities were established nationwide during the New Deal era, with the first one being Arthurdale in Preston County, West Virginia.

Come explore the successes and failures of this government-funded community. Tour a 1930’s-era house, see the progressive school and preschool, and learn about the early businesses. Think through the well-intended ideas of socialism – and why this project ultimately failed. But also get a glimpse of life as it was in the 1930’s.
