The WV Hope Scholarship becomes universal for the 2026-27 school year. In more than one regard, that’s an unwelcome reality for conservative thinkers.
Since Hope’s inception, CHEWV has carefully and consistently outlined the distinctions between private versus public homeschooling. To date, however, we have merely alluded to the driving force to push private education under public funding. Now we urge you to go deeper. We have concerns, and we want families to be fully informed before making decisions.
HSDLA President Jim Mason shares his concerns in a recently-released 20-minute podcast. That is a good place to start if you prefer a short overview of concerns.
Lisa Logan, homeschool mom turned influencer, was one of the first to trace ESA roots to UN education initiatives. Quoted by such conservative homeschool leaders as HSLDA and Classical Conversations, Logan’s . thought-provoking findings can be found here, on page 18. (She provides links to the actual UNESCO documents if you want to examine them for yourself.)
International journalist Alex Newman has been speaking out on the same subject, and you can find his research just before Logan’s (page 15) of the same document from the Christian Education Initiative.
While many individual supporters of school choice funding are well-intentioned allies, even legislative comrades, it doesn’t necessarily follow that Educational Spending Accounts, like HOPE, are without dangerous underpinnings. While there may be wide ranges of opinions amongst homeschooling parents, knowledge is never amiss. Summer may be the perfect time to delve a little deeper for yourself.
While the world casually dismisses ignorance as bliss, God warns, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Think twice: the old adage, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” may be more fitting than we realize.
