CHEWV is pleased to announce the addition of Adam and Lori Shutler to the governing board. Adam and Lori previously served on the Leadership Team with Lori overseeing our 2024 high school seminar. She has also hosted the graduation receptions for several years.
Adam and Lori home educate all four of their children, three sons and a daughter. Adam describes their reason for homeschooling “conviction” here:
Even before we had our first child, Lori and I discussed our education options. We had both attended public schools as we grew up, although I had spent my elementary school days in a private school in South Carolina. Together, we discussed public school, private school, and homeschooling options, but we knew early on that we had concerns about the public and private school systems. It boiled down to what our children would and would not be taught in these settings. Our faith in Jesus Christ would ultimately guide our decision.
Lori had some hesitation about her ability to adequately teach the children, but those concerns slowly started to subside as she spoke with other homeschooling moms. One lady Lori was close to, where she grew up in Charleston, was a large influence.
Through much prayer, we ultimately decided to try homeschooling and see how the first few years went. Those initial hesitations have turned into a passion for homeschooling and for encouraging other families that they, too, can homeschool. Not only homeschooling, but homeschooling with our focus on our Saviour, Jesus Christ.
At the end of the day, parents are ultimately responsible in every aspect of raising their children. This includes, but is not limited to, their physical, emotional, educational, and spiritual needs. Proverbs 22:6 states that we are to “Train up a child in the way he should go…” With Solomon as the penman, this directive is straight from God. It is our responsibility, as parents, to train our children, and as Christians, to guide our children according to the Word of God. The homeschooling setting provides the best opportunity for this. As the Bible states in Psalm 119:105, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” The Word of God should be guiding all of us in our lives, and we believe that we will answer to God one day for how we raised our children. This is a weighty thought but also a great blessing that we can point our children to Christ in all that we do.
