Remembering Dr. Suiter

by | Aug 30, 2026 | News

We rejoice for Dr. Phil Suiter who finished his earthly race on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, and preceded us into the presence of our Father in heaven.

West Virginia homeschoolers owe Dr. Suiter a debt of gratitude for helping secure the freedom to homeschool. As a former Assistant State Superintendent of Schools and then a leader in the Christian School movement, he had been the chief architect of the 1983 Exemption K which secured the right to nonpublic/Christian school attendance. With that rich experience, Dr. Suiter went on to assist the handful of families who waged the long and personally costly campaign to win a reasonable homeschool exemption.

Dr. Suiter met with the lobbying families, keeping them informed, consistent, and concise. His sage advice, along with his quiet confidence and faith, served as an anchor for those who unexpectedly found themselves lobbying legislators so that they could continue to direct their children’s education. The Gene Board family recalls, “Dr. Suiter’s leadership and guidance formed the bedrock of our journey.”

Mike Hutchison, former President of Christian Home Educators of West Virginia, remembers Dr. Suiter as a great personal friend and an advocate for parental rights as it pertains to education. “He was very influential in all aspects of education in West Virginia… but made a tremendous impact on non-public education.”

CHEWV is greatly indebted to Dr. Suiter, and he will be greatly missed.
