In Memory of Edie Carey

1959-2022

A virtuous woman, who can find?  Her price is far above rubies.

Edith “Edie” Kathryn Carey died peacefully at LewisGale Hospital in Pulaski, VA on January 22, 2022. She went to sleep on her birthday surrounded by her family and woke up in Heaven the next morning. Edie was 63.

WV homeschooling families have been blessed by a woman many may not even know. Working behind the scenes as a faithful wife and mother, Edie Carey was known by those who loved her as gentle and strong, a winsome mix. Edie was a dedicated homemaker, homeschooling mother, providing the support her husband John needed to serve as CHEWV’s Legislative Liaison at the State Capitol for over 20 years, enabling the elimination of the WV Four-Year rule and the passage of many pieces of legislation in support of home-schooling freedoms.

While formally serving on the Christian Home Educators of WV board as a contact person for homeschooling parents, she also took every opportunity to mentor young and homeschooling mothers wherever she lived, which led to the founding of one the largest homeschool support groups in the state.

Edie’s love for Christ and compassion for others touched many, many lives and she will be very dearly missed by all who knew her. And while we deeply mourn our loss, we greatly rejoice in her gain. For her to live was truly Christ and so, for her, to die was truly gain.

The depth of her sacrifice for John, her beloved children, her dear friends, and for all WV homeschoolers will likely never be known this side of heaven.  But Edie would quickly give glory only to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, whom she knew intimately and relied on constantly.

She has fought the good fight.  She has finished the race.  She has kept the faith.

We are blessed to have sojourned alongside of her and anticipate our joyous reunion in the realms of Glory.

For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Philippians 1:21
